WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Embassy of the Republic of Mali in the United States formally launched the Malian Diaspora Skills Directory on Saturday, August 22, 2026, opening a new channel for identifying and connecting the expertise of Malians around the world with national priorities.
Presided over by Mossa Ag Attaher, Minister of Malians Abroad and African Integration, the hybrid ceremony brought together the Ambassador of Mali to the United States, members of the diplomatic corps, Washington-area community representatives, and participants joining remotely from several countries. The breadth of that participation underscored the strong interest in a practical tool designed to make the diaspora's professional experience more visible and more accessible.
During the presentation, participants explored the directory's registration process and its coverage of economic, administrative, academic, private-sector, and emerging professional fields. The platform, available at malidiaspora.org, is intended to grow into a current, structured resource for public institutions and development partners seeking specialized profiles for projects and initiatives.
Beyond compiling names and qualifications, the initiative establishes a framework for collaboration. By linking diaspora professionals with ministries, universities, research centers, businesses, and other development actors, the directory can support knowledge transfer, mentoring, research, innovation, and investment. Questions from attendees on registration, data use, and future matching mechanisms reflected the seriousness with which the community received the project.
The official launch marked the beginning of a long-term process rather than a concluding ceremony. Its success will depend on broad participation and regularly updated profiles, but the Washington gathering demonstrated a clear readiness among Malians abroad to contribute their skills, networks, and experience to the country's development.
Pr Harouna Abdoulaye Maiga, President of MaliWatch, joined the call and emphasized that data protection must remain central to the platform. He stressed that users' professional information should be managed responsibly, with appropriate safeguards and a clear purpose: connecting diaspora expertise with Mali's development needs.
